South American airline GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes has ordered 60 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes.
The 737 MAX is a new version of Boeing's workhorse single-aisle airliner, outfitted with more efficient CFM LEAP-1B engines. It's scheduled to enter service in 2017.
GOL's order is worth approximately $6 billion at list prices, although airlines get substantial, undisclosed discounts. This value makes the order the largest in GOL's 12-year history and the largest airplane order ever from a single South American airline. Brazilians operate a fleet which includes only 737-700 and 800's.
